International Women's Day

Today marks a focal point in the movement for women's rights and equality. We celebrate this day globally to reflect upon the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Did you know women earn 23% less than men globally? No country can say they have achieved gender equality. There is still more to be done. Less than 25% of women have seats in parliament as of 2019, one in three women experience gender-based violence and legal restrictions have kept 2.7 billion women from accessing the same choice of jobs and opportunities as men (United Nations, 2020). "International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities" (United Nations, 2020). Although we have made big changes and progress, we still have a long way to go with many obstacles remaining with regards to changes in unchanged in law and culture. Women continue to be undervalued, they work more and earn less, they have experienced violence and have fewer choices and opportunities.

Codability aims towards empowering and supporting women to get into tech and learn how to code. Therefore, it is only fitting we celebrate this day and share it on our social media. This picture above was a post the day before International Women's Day 2020 and today a 20-second animation went live to followers to view. When starting the project and planning the Gantt chart I thought about March being the date when the project was launched in particular this day as it is in line with Codability values and the aims of the app. However, due to timings and the scope of the project is was not possible to launch in March.

Women's March

Women's March is a women-led movement providing education o a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for anyone to engage in their local communities through programs, training, and events. The aim is "to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change. Women's March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect" (Women's March, 2020). Their principles are:

  • Ending violence
  • Reproductive rights
  • Workers right
  • Civil rights
  • Disability rights
  • Immigrants rights
  • Environmental justice

There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish. The future is female.
